How to disinfect a well system

 



WELL WATER
Well water testing (along with a well performance test) is vital to any home purchase when a well is present. Water is the single most important resource used so quality water is a must. The primary bacteria that gets in water is coliform bacteria. Coliform can form in any well system or water pipe system. Regular well maintenance is vital to clean water. Properties that are on or close to farming land are more susceptible to Nitrates and Nitrites getting into water (due to animal waste and fertilizers migrating into the water table). Lead is another common metal which can cause brain damage in infants (at high levels). HATS Inspector always recommends testing well water and we offer water testing as a third party tester. Treatment of water can vary, however, in most cases, chlorine treatment will clean up the coliform bacteria.Some wells may require elaborate ultraviolet filters to be installed.

Drilled wells are typically 8 inch diameter and over 100 feet deep. The pump is submerged into the casing (plastic sleeve that lines the hole). A screen in the pump filters out large particles, whereas, a paper filter (located close to the bladder) filters out the finer particles. The bladder tank is a 10 to 40 gallon vessel that has a bladder that maintains consistent pressure on the water lines. Low pressure can be attributed to low pressure (under 30 lbs) in the bladder tank. Debris and silt can also slow pressure.
Bored wells are shallow 2 feet wide holes and usually no more than 50 feet deep. The pump is usually located above the ground surface and can require higher maintenance.
